Why haven't they remade "I Dream of Jeannie" yet?

Everything else has had a remake/reboot. Some multiple times!

Anna Faris would have probably been pretty prefect for that, but she may be a bit too old now.

Maybe Margot Robie could do it and finally be in something that doesn't lose the studios money.

And of course Chris Pine as Major Anthony Nelson.

This is a no-brainer.

I dunno OP. Maybe it's too unwoke? But for the life of me I can't figure out what they haven't remade Beulah!

by Anonymousreply 1December 27, 2022 12:05 AM

No-one would watch it.

by Anonymousreply 2December 27, 2022 12:10 AM

I tried to rewatch it as an adult and just couldn't. Even I am too 'woke' to be able to enjoy it. Shame, I really loved it as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 3December 27, 2022 12:14 AM

You probably couldn't do it. There is cultural appropriation, images of women being seen as subservient. I don't think a studio would touch it because it would piss everybody off.

by Anonymousreply 4December 27, 2022 12:15 AM

A djinn is an Arabic (I.e. Muslim) spirit. You want to go there in 2023?

by Anonymousreply 5December 27, 2022 12:15 AM

A blonde genie? No way could they get away with shenanigans like that today.

by Anonymousreply 6December 27, 2022 12:40 AM

A blonde genie who calls her master, "master".

by Anonymousreply 7December 27, 2022 12:45 AM

"I Dream of Jeannie" was perfect for the sixties time era. It wouldn't work now. A remake would destroy the show's legacy and no-one would watch it in 2023.

Surely someone in TV writers land has some fresh new ideas? No need to rehash and remake everything. There are plenty of books and stories that could be made instead.

by Anonymousreply 8December 27, 2022 12:46 AM

Nobody wants to see a black trans Jeannie.

She hardly loses the studios money all the time, And Babylon flopping has more to do with opening during the "tripledemic" frenzy and a historical winter storm.

by Anonymousreply 11December 27, 2022 12:51 AM

It would have to be super campy and tongue-in-cheek.

by Anonymousreply 12December 27, 2022 12:54 AM

r12 which would ruin it as every other disaster remake of old tv shows....

besides, she would be strong, co-dependent, mary sue, who gets revenge on the patriarchy and teachers her master to check his privilege, stop chasing space and embrace mother earth by destroying elon musk.

by Anonymousreply 13December 27, 2022 12:59 AM

I would probably watch a remake of Harper Valley PTA. In the right hands it could work in 2023. And instead of the scolds being hypocritical church ladies, the board would now be woke scolds who are obsessed with calling people out for misgendering and cultural appropriation. When the mom shows up at the PTA meeting, she would bring the receipts and snatch wigs.

Make 'Genie' a guy. Sam Asghari?

by Anonymousreply 15December 27, 2022 1:06 AM

They did a porno version called I Cream on Jeannie.

by Anonymousreply 16December 27, 2022 1:19 AM

Ha, just saw this on Reddit. Wouldn't fly in 2022!

There's an IMDB page that says a remake is "in development".

[quote]There's an IMDB page that says a remake is "in development".

I'm gonna assume it's gonna stay in development.

If Jeannie is blonde - people are going to scream.

If Jeannie is Persian - people are going to scream.

If Jeannie calls Tony, master - people are going to scream.

If Dr. Bellows is gay or black or Asian - people are going to scream.

If Roger is gay or black or Asian - people are going to scream.

There is just no way anyone can win.

by Anonymousreply 19December 27, 2022 2:25 AM

The cast is made up entirely of Tesla/Apple devotees. Major Nelson has Jeannie turn Elon Musk into a toy poodle that gets violated at a dog summer camp. Rodger is gay. Will Smith plays Jeannie, and he shows his belly button.

by Anonymousreply 20December 27, 2022 2:34 AM

This show wouldn't have existed had the Sexual Revolution wasn't going on and networks wanted to test the limits.

Bewitched is a timeless classic that had a modern sensibility with the empowered women and used magic beings as proximities for minorities. Same reason The Addams Family endured. Bewitched could be remade and it would work.

I Dream of Jeannie was created to capitalize on Bewitched but add a softcore porn element of a beautiful blonde genie in a bottle wearing a skinny outfit (for 1965) who wants to serve her "master", a goodlooking young guy and they live together unmarried. The sexual tension and raciness sold it but it's so tame today. That's why it's so dated. The premise isn't funny today because society moved on.

by Anonymousreply 21December 27, 2022 2:34 AM

*skimpy

by Anonymousreply 22December 27, 2022 2:35 AM

So somebody IS trying!! Thanks, R18.

Ok, so maybe Jeannie doesn't have to be a white blond this time. And instead of calling him Master, she could be more assertive and call him by his first name. And instead of constantly fouling things up while trying to help, she could secretly be very resentful and purposefully trying to ruin his life and career out of spite.

But Chris Pine is still Anthony Nelson. I won't budge on that one.

by Anonymousreply 23December 27, 2022 2:38 AM

Episode 1, Major Nelson comes out of his bedroom in the morning and trips over his dick.

Hilarity ensues.

by Anonymousreply 24December 27, 2022 2:39 AM

Maybe when Fox News runs out of programming they can put it on late at night to own the libs.

by Anonymousreply 25December 27, 2022 3:02 AM

It was a crappy knock-off of Bewitched. If anything should get remade into a movie or series, it should be Bewitched.

by Anonymousreply 26December 27, 2022 3:04 AM

It's always funny how things that were provocative or progressive for the time end up being look back at as problematic or too traditional.

by Anonymousreply 27December 27, 2022 3:05 AM

“Harper Valley PTA” could easily be remade without changing much (sadly.)

by Anonymousreply 28December 27, 2022 3:11 AM

R27 lol in 50 years we’ll all look back in (sp) cringe.

by Anonymousreply 29December 27, 2022 3:12 AM

[Quote]She hardly loses the studios money all the time, And Babylon flopping has more to do with opening during the "tripledemic" frenzy and a historical winter storm.

Puss n Boots made $18M this past weekend while the Whitney Houston biopic made $4.8 and babble-on made $3.6

by Anonymousreply 30December 27, 2022 3:13 AM

We need a real woke version of this show to reboot.

Ariana DeBose as "Jeannie"

Asia Kate Dillon as "Major Nelson" (but no clarification whether it's Tony or Toni)

RuPaul as 'Major Healey'

Ye as 'Dr. Bellows'

by Anonymousreply 31December 27, 2022 3:36 AM

An earlier poster was right. If you want an unabashed remake of many of the TV titles of the 1950s through the 1990s, look for a porno.

by Anonymousreply 32December 27, 2022 3:52 AM

OP I actually think it's brilliant, and Margot Robbie would have been perfect for the role. She should have made this magma Carta project of instead of Barbie.

by Anonymousreply 33December 27, 2022 3:53 AM

I'm still around! And the outfit still fits!

by Anonymousreply 34December 27, 2022 4:02 AM

But Barbara, your face is pulled tighter than a pair of XXS Skims over Kim Kardashian's overly large ass. You can't even close your eyes anymore. How are you gonna do the "fold your arms and blink" magic thingy?

by Anonymousreply 35December 27, 2022 4:35 AM

R19 - Dr Bellows WAS gay (at least, the actor who played him was)

Now that would be a good remake - prissy closeted Dr Bellows snooping around NASA looking for unexplained phenomena.

by Anonymousreply 37December 27, 2022 5:35 AM

[quote]If Jeannie is Persian - people are going to scream.

Not true, R19. How would people have a problem if Nasim Pedrad was cast?
