Everything seems to cost 50 dollars. Or 100. Or 300 bucks.
Run into the grocery store to pick up a couple items. 50 dollars. A bag of groceries for 4 days? 100 dollars. A new hiking jacket? 300 bucks. Or 600 bucks for that matter. A basic duvet cover? 100 dollars.
I suppose I should be grateful that I'm not a lady jonesing for a Chanel or Hermes handbag.

Here's something that occurred to me today. I live in Midtown Manhattan, my coffee maker broke yesterday. There is not a single store in Manhattan I can walk into and buy a coffee maker. However, if I wanted a pound of cannabis, my options are practically unlimited. WTF has happened to this world?

Thank god I had the brains to go to college and grad school, have a career, and not have kids. Otherwise I’d be one of these poor schmucks whining about the cost of gas and groceries. Being childless and partnered and both of us having six figure salaries is wonderful.

R1. Macy’s Herald Square doesn’t sell coffee makers? Is Target still around in Manhattan?

White privilege in a nutshell at R3 . Well, the real world is made of trauma and hunger, you just wouldn't know it cuz you're this pampered little suburban homo

Kiss it R8. I’m sick of people bitching about white privilege like it’s an insult. I embrace it.

What kind of coffee maker are you looking for? Drip? That can be found at Target or Walmart.

Cool R3. But then don't bitch and act smarter than everyone else cuz you began your life at the 30 yard line, while we we started at 0.

R11 How do you how I started at the 30 yard line? I just wasn’t stupid.

Oh, STFU. You already said you had white privilege and that you embrace it. That's was 30-yard line means. Don't be stupid.

I started ahead and with a Boone’s Farm budget. I’ll do it again if I have to. I have enough melanin to not feel guilty.

R15 I have to admit that I do find it funny how so many libbed out white people feel guilty about shit they didn’t do.

R2, Macy's or Bloomingdales have home departments with things like coffee makers. There's Nespresso stores all over town. Of course Target. The fabulous S. Feldman on the Upper East Side. Williams-Sonoma?? PC Richards? So many options... shop in our brick and mortar stores!!!

R1 Maybe you smoked that pound because there is a Target in midtown. 112 W 34th St, New York, NY 10120

So many costs do seem to have become completely irrational. I always liked the saying "The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent." For those of us not in 'The Market" We certainly have been downgraded.

Definitely not, especially on pharmaceuticals. I love paying through the nose for shit the Canadians get for cheap.

R22 NO. And I am OP and not R23.
R3 - I am OP and have all those things except the partner which I dumped 10 years ago. I can "afford" the commodities I want.My remark is that it's surprising what things cost, and the randomness sometimes. Surge pricing on many things except most groceries.
I needed a shower curtain rod yesterday and it was raining so I didn't want to go to the shops. Online the rod I liked was 50 dollars locally (Geneva) but 20 dollars from Amazon Germany. And Amazon Germany is only free shipping for 50 dollars, and that's with prime. So I had to spend 50 dollars to save 30 dollars.
Maybe I need home delivery of a "rod" to chill me out. 😇

R3’s post is not an example of white privilege by the way for whomever said it was. I’m black and could say all of those things F3 said, easily.
Anyway, the OP is complaining more about being abused by prices than the prices themselves. I can pay $10 for a cup of coffee but would never do so when I know it costs the place $,25 to make. Americans are abused, gouged, and taken advantage of on the daily. AND the profiteers have convinced people like R3 that bragging about being able to afford it is a good thing.
I live in Italy now. And things pretty much cost what they should cost for what they are worth. Except over the counter medications can be high. But prescriptions are pretty much free.

A really dumb thread. Yes, you can find coffee makers in Midtown. Even at Whole Foods nothing costs $50.

Being without the means to make coffee is an emergency.
As with fire extinguishers, two per household is the recommended amount.
I know instant coffee has its detractors. When jonesing, though, you'll thank your lucky stars when you reach for it and it's there.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 13, 2024 1:35 PM

R30, it's easy to do if you eat some convenience and prepackaged foods along with the cheaper stuff. I spent $70 on groceries today and don't expect it to last past Friday.
And yes, I'm kind of fat, but not really fat.

R1 what do you mean. You mean like mom and pop? You can buy a coffee maker in Target or Bestbuy. And most supermarkets. I know Manhattan doesn’t have Walmarts but there options like the ones I stated.
